Ugly Outing for Kuo...

MLB:
Kuo was cruising through the first 3 innings before the Padres knocked him out of the game in the 4th inning. 5 hits (including a 3 run HR) and a walk would plate 4 runs for the Padres. Rudy Seanez, who relieved Kuo would allow 2 more inherited base runners to score - thus giving Kuo an ugly line on the night: 3.1 IP 7 runs 6 hits 3 BB 3 K's. Kuo was clocked between 88-91 mph on his fastball. Kuo is in line to pick up his 4th loss of the season while his ERA has inflated to 7.71 after tonight's performance. Box

Tsao has been activated/recalled by the Dodgers - and pitched a scoreless 9th inning last night.*updated*

US MINORS:

R - GCL action - Red 5 - Red Sox 4: CH Lin was 0-3 with a walk and his 3rd SB of the season - he did have 3 K's. CH Huang was the main offensive force for the Sox tonight as he was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI's. Box

Bad news regarding Red Sox prospect WY Lin - he might be out for the season as he's been placed on the 60 day DL per BA. On the same page, the Mariners placed CA Huang on the military list - so we won't be seeing him in the US this year.

A SS - Tri-City won 6-1. Kuo pitched well as he picked up win #2 on the young season. Kuo threw 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits to go along with 4 walks and 7 K's. Box

A - Wisky lost 8-0. Lo was 0-2 with 2 walks. Box

A - Greenville lost 19-6. Chiang was 1-2 with a walk. Box

AA - Well, it appears that Ching-Lung Lo is out with an injury - he hasn't pitched since his last start on June 18th.

AA - Jacksonville won 6-0. Hu was 1-4 with a double and a walk - he did commit his 9th error of the season. Box
For the second year in a row, Hu has been named a Southern League All-Star.

CPBL:
Bears 4 - Bulls 3: Gary Rath won his 9th game of the season, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits - he did have 7 K's and 3 walks. Bears RF Chien-Wei Tsai was game MVP with a 2-4/2 RBI night. Tarzan had a big night for the Bulls, slamming HR #9 while going 3-3 with a double and 2 RBI's.

Lions 9 - Elephants 2: Game MVP Pete Munro picked up victory #6 on the season as he limited the Elephants prolific offense to 2 runs (1 earned) over 7 innings - allowing only 4 hits and K'ing 4. Chia-Chia was 1-4.

NY Game Suspended....

MLB:
Heavy rains would cause today's game between the Yanks and Orioles to be suspended during the top of the 8th inning. Chien-Ming Wang started for the Yanks and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits over 6.1 innings. Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, Wang found himself with another 4-2 lead. Unfortunately, he was unable to hold the lead and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in the inning and left the game down 6-4. Fortunately for Wang, the Yankees offense would pick things up and score 4 runs of its own in the 8th inning. Wang would earn a ND upon completion of this game in July. Box

Kuo will pitch tomorrow vs. Chris Young and the Padres.

US MINORS:
A+ - Kinston won 6-3. Tseng won his 2nd game of the season - allowing 3 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings. Box

A - Lansing lost 4-2. Keng pitched 2.1 perfect innings. Box

A - Greenville won 6-5. Chiang was 0-5 and committed his 5th error of the season. Box

A SS - Nice article on Po-Yu Lin.

CPBL:
Lions 10 - Elephants 3: Game MVP honors went to Chih-Kang Kao who was 2-5 with a RBI. The Elephant would waste a strong starting performance from Joe Dawley who pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits to go along with 6 K's. Chia-Chia was 1-4.

Alaska:
CK Lee picked up win #3 on the season for the Bucs - he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits over 7.2 innings on Wednesday. Box/PlayByPlay

A - Wisky lost 5-2. Lo was 1-5 with another OF assist. Box

R - In other GCL action, Chiu failed to survive the first inning as the Reds lost to the Orioles 16-7. Chiu allowed 5 runs on 5 hits (including 2 HR's) in 2/3 of an inning. Box

An article on Hu and the world team middle infield roster.

NPB Minors:
Yang was 2-6 in his team's 11-8 loss.

The Korean HS baseball championships are going on right now. The top eligible players will compete in this year's Asian Junior Baseball Championships in Taiwan.

There isn't too much info on who will represent Japan in the AAA Junior Championships, but the top concensus HS player in Japan right now is Sho Nakata. Here's a Youtube vid of him pitching - although his future in proball is projected as an OF.

6/25/07 Recap....

US MINORS:
R - In the GCL, the Red Sox lost to the Orioles 8-4. CH Lin struggled at the plate going 0-5 with 4 K's - the plus is he collected another OF assist gunning down a base runner trying to stretch a double into a triple. Lin will need some time to get his batting stroke going - aside from his GCL play, his last competitive ball game was back in February. CH Huang was 1-4 with a walk. Box

A - Wisky is up 10-3 in the 6th inning. Lo is currently 3-3 as his BA has finally cracked the .280 mark. Box

AA- Jacksonville is up 2-1 in the 7th inning. Hu is 1-3 with a walk so far. Box

MLB:
Wang's next start will be on Thursday against Daniel Cabrera and the Orioles.

With the win, the Cobras sealed the deal on being crowned the first half CPBL champs.*updated*

Tough Loss for Kuo....

MLB:
Kuo took the loss today against the D-Rays in a game where he probably should have earned a ND. The Dodgers spotted Kuo an early 2 run lead thanks to Gonzo's 2 run HR. Kuo pitched well through the first 3 innings, allowing only a leadoff - first pitch HR to Ty Wigginton in the 2nd inning. Kuo would allow another run to score in the 4th after Delmon Young singled in Carl Crawford. After facing 2 batters in the 6th inning (allowing a leadoff double and then K'ing the next hitter), Kuo was pulled when his pitch count reached 95. Kuo was pitching only on 3 days rest after his last disastrous outing against the Jays. Reliever Rudy Seanez would come in to relieve Kuo with an inherited runner on 2nd base. The first batter Seanez faced would single to LF and Luis Gonzalez would make a strong throw that beat the runner to home plate. Unfortunately Dodgers C Mike Lieberthal had the ball knocked out of his mitt and the D-Rays would take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Kuo was charged with the earned run- his 3rd of the game. The Dodgers would end up losing 9-4. Kuo pitched very well - allowing 3 runs on only 4 hits over 5.1 innings. He had 8 K's (getting Iwamura and Crawford twice) with only 1 walk while clocking 91-93 and topping out at 94 mph on his fastball. Box/Recap

NPB:
Lin was 0-4 as his team fell to the Fighters 3-1. His BA is down to .303 now. Box

US MINORS:
R - No update for the scheduled game between the GCL Reds and Red Sox. In the meantime, check out Che-Hsuan Lin's own website/blog - lots of pics.

SS A - Sheng-An Kuo earned a ND, but pitched well despite his team's 5-2 loss on Sunday. Kuo threw 7.1 innings, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits to go along with 7 K's. Kuo left the game after an apparent foot injury. Box
*Updated*

A - Greenville lost 8-4. Chiang was 1-4. Box

A - Keng got hammered today in a relief appearance - allowing 5 runs on 6 hits (including 2 HR's) in 2 innings. He earned his 4th loss of the season as Lansing lost 6-1. Box

AA - Jacksonville lost 3-2. Hu was 1-5 with a double. Box

CPBL:
Lions 11 - Bulls 2: Game MVP Pete Munro spun a good game against the Bulls, allowing only 1 run and 3 hits over 6 innings. He received some run support from slugger Kuo-Ching Kao, who cracked his 12th HR of the season. For the Bulls, Tarzan was 1-4 with a double and a RBI.

Elephants 9 - Bears 3: The Bears wasted a good performance from SP Yu-Wei Hsu who allowed 2 runs over 6.1 innings while K'ing 6. The Bears bullpen would melt down allowing 7 runs over the last 2 innings. Game MVP honors went to Elephants LF Antonio Alvarez who cracked his 6th HR of the season and was 3-4 with 4 RBI's. Chia-Chia was 1-4 with a double, while CFC was 1-3 with a double.

Amateur:
Taipei County was upset by Taoyuan County in the championship game of the Yu-Shan Cup 2-1. Pitching for Taipei County was Kupao pitcher Rong-Hao Hsieh. Hsieh was the story of the tourney, clocking 94 mph in the championship game while throwing consistently around 91 mph - remember this kid is 16 years old. Despite his dominant fastball, Hsieh took yet another loss in a championship game (he lost to Che-Hsuan Lin and Nan-Ying in Feb.) Hsieh threw a complete game, allowing the 2 runs on 8 hits to go along with 6 K's. The Asian Junior Baseball Championships coming up this fall will have its roster made up primarily of players from the Taoyuan County team.

Wang Earns a ND...

MLB:
Chien-Ming Wang had difficulty finding the strike zone on Sat. versus the Giants and ended up with a ND after relievers Myers and Bruney were unable to hold on to a 4-3 lead in the 7th inning. Wang was partly to blame as well - entering the 7th inning with a 4-2 lead - he allowed a solo HR and a single before being pulled. Of the 86 pitches Wang threw, only 46 were called strikes. Wang pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits - he had 2 walks and 0 K's. The Giants would eventually come out on top with a 6-5 win that lasted 13 innings. The ND snaps Wang's 4 game win-streak. Box/Recap

A Whole Lotta Lin(s) Going 'Round....

US MINORS:
R - Checking out the box score for the GCL game between the Red Sox and Twins had me seeing double - Che-Hsuan Lin and Wang-Wei Lin faced off against each other today - how appropriate, the Chinese character for Lin: is made up of twin radicals & Wang-Wei's twin brother is Red Sox righty Wang-Yi Lin.

The Lin Twins: W.Y.(L) & W.W.(R)

The two former junior NT teammates did well - Wang-Wei Lin was 2-5 with a double, a RBI, and his 2nd SB of the season - while Che-Hsuan Lin got his first hit of the season, going 1-4 while also gunning down a man at the plate for his 1st OF assist of the season. C.H. Lin was also picked off at 1st base. C.H. Lin's teammate C.H. Huang was 1-3. The Twins beat the Red Sox 4-0. Box

R - Po-Yu Lin was very impressive in his debut for the Bristol Sox. Lin threw a 6 inning shutout earning his first career pro win, allowing only 4 hits to go along with 7 K's and 0 walks. Bristol won 8-0. Box

A - Greenville lost 8-5. Chiang was 0-3 with a walk and 2 K's. Box

A - Wisky is currently losing 3-0 in the 8th inning. Lo is 2-2 with a double, a walk, and his 16th SB of the season. Box

A+ - Tseng picked up loss #6 on the season as Kinston lost 5-2. Tseng lasted 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits to go along with 2 K's and 4 walks. Box

AA - Hu's heating up! - Jacksonville won game 1 of a doubleheader 5-4. Hu was 1-1 with 2 walks and hit his 4th HR of the season - a solo shot. He also had his 11th SB of the season. Box
In game 2, Hu hit his 5th HR of the season and is currently 2-3 as his team is up 4-0 in the 7th inning. Box

MLB:

CPBL:

Lions 3 - Bulls 2: Tilson Brito hit HR #16 to tie Chia-Chia for the league lead in that dept and helped pitcher Chih-Chiang Chang win his first game of the season. Chang threw 5.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits - he was voted game MVP. For the Bulls, Tarzan was 2-4 with 2 doubles.

Kuo Roughed Up....

MLB:
Kuo's third start of the season against the Blue Jays wasn't pretty. Kuo didn't survive the second inning, in which the Blue Jays batted around on him. The "Big Hurt" started the inning with a double and ended the inning with a huge grand slam against Kuo. After a 1-2-3 first inning, Kuo allowed 8 runs on 6 hits in the 2nd inning alone. Two walks allowed by Kuo in the inning didn't help either as both runners would end up scoring. Box/Recap
Hopefully Kuo can shake this one off and give another quality start the next time out.

Wang's next start in SF is expected to be well received by the Taiwanese diaspora in the area.

NPB:
Lin was 1-5 as the Tigers won 5-0. Box

US MINORS:
R - Wang-Wei Lin made his debut with the GCL Twins - he was 0-3 with a walk as the DH - he also stole his 1st base of the season. The Twins beat the Pirates 5-3. Box

MISC:
The Yanks announced the signing of 2 teenage kids from China today. This is an interesting move since the Yankees have been conspicuously absent in Taiwan recently - (John Cox, the Yanks former Pac-Rim Coordinator who signed Chien-Ming Wang in 2000 was fired last year).

The Mariners set the precedent (with signing Chinese players) when they signed 16 year old Chao Wang from China in 2001 (who has since then been released from the organization).

Near CG Win for Wang....

MLB:

Leaving the game to a standing "O"
AP Photo

Wang was simply dominant for the majority of the game versus the Mets. Wang chalked up 10 K's - a career high, mixing in his ever-improving slider and change-up to complement his sinker against the NY Mets - who sported the top hitting lineup in the National League. Before hitting a pitch count of 113 pitches, Wang lasted 8.2 innings - allowing 2 runs on 6 hits - to go along with 10 K's and 1 walk. Despite fatiguing in the 9th inning (Wang was leaving pitches up in the zone) - he was still hitting 95 mph on the gun. Wang is now 6-1 in his last 7 starts (7-4 overall) and lowers his ERA on the season to 3.33. - Simply a tremendous showing from the young man.
Box/Recap

Lin broke out of a mini-slump with a big game for the Tigers. Lin was 3-4, hitting his 10th HR of the season, and was intentionally walked in the 9th inning - the Tigers would put up 9 runs in that inning. The Tigers beat the Marines 11-7. Box

A Night to Remember - Wang outduels Webb/Kuo Homers and Wins!!

MLB:

Barton Silverman/NY Times

Chien-Ming Wang had another outstanding outing, limiting the Arizona Diamondbacks to 1 run on 6 hits over 7 innings. The one run came on a rare HR allowed by Wang in the 4th inning that was left up over the plate. Brandon Webb, last season's NL Cy Young Winner, pitched well but got in a hole early when he too allowed a 3-run HR. Wang improves to 6-4 and lowers his ERA to 3.49. Wang (3 consecutive wins now) and the Yankees (winners of 7 straight) are on a roll after tonight's 4-1 win. Box/Recap

HR Trot - AP Photo

AP Photo

Topping Wang's performance is pretty tough, but Kuo did just that tonight. Facing off against the NY Mets potent lineup, Kuo threw 7 innings - allowing 1 run on 5 hits. The most impressive part of tonight's pitching performance was Kuo's improved command of the strikezone - 59/89 pitches went for strikes. Kuo was clocked at 88-92 mph on his fastball.
Kuo helped his cause by unloading a solo 412 foot shot in the 2nd inning - the last of back-back-back homeruns for the Dodgers - all 3 HR's came on 3 consecutive pitches from Mets SP John Maine. Kuo caused a little controversy with what is now being called the "Kuo throw" when he flipped his bat after homering. In the post game interview, Mets Manager Willie Randolph didn't seem very pleased with Kuo's actions. From my point of view, it was Kuo's first - and maybe last ML HR - so it's not like he knows what to do in a situation like this - bottom line: it wasn't his intention to spite Maine and the Mets. Kuo picks up career win # 2 and his ERA is now at 3.60. Final score: Dodgers 4 - Mets 1. Box

Here's a vid that I uploaded of Kuo's HR: Link

NPB:
The Seibu Lions deactivated Ming-Chieh Hsu.

US MINORS:
A - Greenville lost in extra innings 9-8. Chiang as a PH, walked in his only PA. Box

A - Wisky won 4-2. Lo was 1-3 with a triple and 2 RBI's. Box

CPBL:
Bulls 4 - Whales 1: The Bulls got a great outing from Chien-Fu Yang, who allowed 1 unearned run on 4 hits over 7 innings. Unfortunately for Yang, he would earn a ND, but he did manage 7 K's to go along with 2 walks. Game MVP went to "Tarzan" as he cracked his 6th HR of the season, a 3-run shot in the 8th inning that would prove to be the difference in the game. Tarzan was 2-4 with 3 RBI's.

Alaska:
Chu-Kuan Lee earned the victory for the Bucs on Monday night. The Bucs won 9-3. Lee pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits - he also had 8 K's and 2 walks. Box/PlaybyPlay

Lin & Monday Scores....

Lin:
Lin's signing was made official today in Taiwan. The Taipei Times quotes Red Sox Pac-Rim Coordinator John Deeble on Lin: "We wish him well. We think he is a very special player. (Lin has) four pluses as a runner, a defender, a thrower, and playing with great range."

Here he is in his Red Sox garb wearing #51 in honor of his favorite player - Ichiro.

According to news reports, Lin has been timed going from home to first base at 3.8 seconds. That puts him in some elite company - Ichiro out of the batter's box from the left side has been timed around 3.6 to 3.7 seconds. Lin's time (as a RHH) easily grades out at as an 80/80 on the scouting scale for speed. We'll get to see how his speed translates on the base paths this year in the GCL. Lin is scheduled to leave for the US on the 16th of June and will begin his career in the US a few days later ~ 19th of June. Lin is in a rush to get his career started because he hopes to make "The Show" in 4 years. Good luck to Lin and congrats to the Boston Red Sox!

NPB:
Lin was 1-4 as the Tigers got shutout Monday 1-0. Box

Yang continues to struggle with the parent club. He was 0-2 with 2 K's as the Fighters lost 1-0. Box

US MINORS:

Signing Day...Che-Hsuan Lin to Red Sox...+ Others...

Red Sox Ink Lin:

The Boston Red Sox inked recently graduated HS OF Che-Hsuan Lin to a signing bonus in the ball park of $375-400K. However, the coveted speedster is rumored to have turned down a more lucrative offer from the Mariners because he wanted to be in a Red Sox uniform and is eager to play in the US ASAP. Lin could have easily earned more $$$ had he come to the US and exhibited his skills in a showcase. Lin, who's been profiled before, reportedly has a 100M PB time of 10.78 - the kid can fly! The kid's upside is significant because he possesses so many + tools and is a well polished player for his age.
I've posted several highlight vids of Lin in the past, check here to see them again. Here's 2 new vids of Lin - taken when he was 15:

Other MLB Signing News:

Cubs: Chen(L) & Wen (R)

In addition to pitcher Hong-Wen Chen, the Cubs also signed another Taiwanese kid: 23 year old collegiate OF Chih-Hsiang Wen. Wen, who plays for Taipei Physical Education University, signed for $2,500 + additional money for college tuition. He stands 6'1", weighs 188 pounds, bats and throws righty. He has some power in his bat and has good speed, having run the 100M in 11.30 seconds. Not a household name, the kid has never played on any national squad for Taiwan - although he did graduate from the same junior HS as Chin-Hui Tsao -> Kuang Fu junior high in Hualien, before attending Taitung Agricultural Vocational HS. Wen was primarily a pitcher in HS.*Updated*

A - Lo is currently o-3 as Wisky is losing 8-6. Box

AA - Jacksonville won 5-4. Hu was 0-2 with 2 walks. Box

AA - Tulsa lost 5-3. Lo earned his 5th loss of the season. His final line for the night: 6 IP, 4 ER, 9 hits, 7 K's/1BB. Box

NPB:
Lin kept his 10 game hitting streak intact with a double in his last AB. He had K'd the previous 3 AB's. The Tigers won 2-1, with Lin scoring the GW run in the bottom of the 9th. Box

MC Hsu made an appearance for the Lions in their 8-7 loss today. He threw a perfect 5th inning. Box

MISC:
Interesting story on where baseball stands with Asian American kids - particularly in the Chinese/Taiwanese community. Doing a little research of my own, I live in a city that is predominantly Asian (mostly Chinese) - making up ~ 55% of the city's demographics. However, the local high school varsity baseball program features only 2 kids of Asian descent on the team. The sport of choice for most young Chinese/Taiwanese-American males is basketball.

ND for Kuo...

MLB:
AP Photo

Facing the NL leader in K's and ERA in Jake Peavy, the Dodgers needed a standout performance from HC Kuo tonight in order to avoid being swept by their divisional rival. Kuo, in another polarizing performance, kept the Dodgers in the game, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings. However despite K'ing 8 in the game, Kuo had difficulty finding the strike zone for most of the game(allowing 4 walks), often falling behind in the count - of the 103 pitches he threw, 46 were called balls/43 were called strikes. Kuo was consistently around 91-93 mph, topping out at 95 mph. His night done with the game deadlocked at 1-1 after 6 innings, Kuo would earn some run support from his team in the 7th as the Dodgers would score 3 runs off Peavy to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead. A furious rally by the Padres in the bottom of the 9th would deny Kuo and the Dodgers a win. Final score: Padres 6 - Dodgers 5. Kuo's ERA is now at a respectable 4.85. Box

US MINORS:
AA - Hu was 1-4 as his team fell 7-2. Box

A - Greenville lost 6-5. Chiang was 0-2 with 2 walks and committed his 3rd error of the season. Box

Complete Game Win for Wang...

MLB:
In easily his best outing of the year, CM Wang threw a complete game gem versus the White Sox. After laboring against the Red Sox in his last outing, Wang was very efficient, needing only 104 pitches to pick up win #5. Wang allowed 1 run on 5 hits, to go along with 4 K's and 1 walk. Wang dropped his ERA to 3.73 as the Yankees defeated the ChiSox 5-1. Box/Recap

Kuo is scheduled to face Padres ace Jake Peavy tomorrow - that's a tough matchup for Kuo - Peavy is arguably the premiere pitcher in the NL.

NPB:
Despite his team losing 11-1, Lin managed to go 2-5 to raise his BA to .348, creeping closer to CL leader Aoki who is at .355 Box

The Fighters won 4-1. Yang was 0-1 with a walk. Box

CPBL:
Bears 14 - Lions 8: In another CPBL slugfest that saw the Bears rap out 21 hits, Bears ss Chih-Sheng Lin hit his 6th HR of the season, while Kuo-Ching Kao hit his 10th and Tilson Brito hit his 12th HR of the season for the Lions. Bears pitcher Yu-Wei Hsu would earn the win, throwing 6 innings in relief of starter Wen-Hsiung Hsu, who lasted only 2 innings. Bears CF Long-Yi Huang earned game MVP honors for his 4-6 night at the plate. CFC was 2-5 with 2 RBI's.

Whales 2 - Cobras 2: The game was called after 7 innings due to rain. Game MVP honors went to Cobras 2B Shih-Hao Huang who was 2-3 with a 2-run HR - his first round-bagger of the season.

Kuo Loses in Seasonal Starting Debut....

MLB:
After a rough first inning, (in which Kuo allowed 3 consecutive hits and also walked in a run with the bases loaded) Kuo would settle down and blank the Pirates over the next 3.2 innings. Kuo can thank his corner outfielders for saving him a run or two - RF Andre Ethier gunned down a man at the plate in the first, and LF Luis Gonzalez would track down a deep fly ball in the 5th inning. Kuo, who was often behind in the count, was clocked consistently around 91-93 mph on his fastball. Recap/Box
NPB:
The Fighters beat the Tigers 8-5. Lin was 1-4 while Yang was 0-3 with 2 K's. Box

Lions 9 - Whales 6: Toot-Toot won his 7th game of the season, throwing 5 shutout innings. MVP honors went to Kuo-Ching Kao, who was 4-5 with 2 doubles and a RBI.

MLB:
