Asian Champs!!

Amateur:

CL HUANG - #1!

Chih-Lung Huang has had one helluva summer - after dominating at the Palomino World Series & throwing well in Joplin, MO, Huang can now add the 2007 Asian Junior Baseball Championship to his impressive resume. CL Huang threw a CG 1-hit shutout, K'd 12, and was clocked at 94-95 mph against South Korea (Taiwan won 1-0) on Wednesday to help Taiwan win the 2007 tourney in impressive fashion - in 5 games played the pitching staff was exceptional: 0 runs allowed, 3 hits total given up. With the win, Huang was able to eradicate memories of last year where he basically shut down the Korean bats in Cuba, but unfortunately ended up losing 1-0 to the eventual 2006 World Junior Baseball Champs. For his phenomenal effort, Huang was voted MVP of the tourney. Taiwan finished 3rd in the last Asian Junior Championships in 2005 and last won the Asian AAA Championships in 2001. Congrats to the kids on a job well done!!! As for what's next for Huang, he says he wants to play first in the NPB and then eventually give the US a shot.

KL LO

(pic from apple daily)

At the Asian AAA Championships, Taiwan shutout Hong Kong 18-0 as the two big guns: Kuo-Lung Lo and Chia-Chu Chen got untracked offensively. The #4 and 5 hitters in the lineup collected 5 hits between the two of them. Lo had an outstanding game, rapping out 3 hits, cracking a HR, and had 3 SB's to lead the offensive onslaught. Chen also added a HR in the second inning. Taiwan will play Sri Lanka tomorrow before the big showdown with South Korea on Wednesday that will essentially decide who will be crowned the 2007 Asian Junior Champs.

Other - The AFL rosters have been announced. Yung-Chi Chen is listed on the Peoria Javelinas roster.

CPBL:
Bulls 4 - Cobras 2: Alfredo Gonzalez won his 8th game of the season and MVP honors after he allowed only 1 run over 7.1 innings. Kuo-Long Hsu and Tarzan both hit HR's (#6 and 16 respectively) to help power the Bulls offense. For the Cobras, without CH Hsieh in the lineup, the only offense came from DH Hung-Yuan Lin who was 3-4 with a double and a RBI.

Other: Trouble in Paradise - The big news going on in Taiwan is the suspension and/or termination of 5 starters from the Chinatrust Whales team who have been suspected of being involved in fixing games. The sad news is that some pretty big names are involved: team captain Han-Chou Tseng and Chun-Lin Chi had their contracts terminated. Three others including star SS Chang-Ming Cheng, Chien-Wei Chen, and speedster Kui-Yu Huang have been suspended pending the results of an investigation into the allegations. The worst case scenario would be that the scandal would force the Whales to shut down operations and fold. That would be disasterous to a financially strapped league (LA New Bears & Macoto Cobras have had financial woes in the past) whose image has been tarnished time and time again. Some are calling for the government to intervene in these dire times.

End of the Road....

Amateur:
Wow, that was one helluva game that transpired today between Taiwan and Japan at the LLWS. Unfortunately for the kids from Taiwan, they came up on the short end of the stick as they lost to Japan 4-3 on a "sayonara" walk-off HR in the bottom of the 10th inning. In a game that saw tremendous pitching from both sides, defensive lapses would allow Japan to tie things up after falling behind 2-0 after 3 innings, and 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 6th. The starting pitching was as advertised for Taiwan as SP Chao-Min Wang hit 77 mph (100 mph ML equivalent) on the gun and will be one to watch out for in the future. His reliever Kai-Ying Chen was very impressive as well, exhibiting tremendous composure and some serious stones after working himself out of a few jams. Unfortunately, the team's offensive woes throughout the tourney came back to bite them in the rear as they managed only 3 hits over 10 innings. Despite the loss, the kids from Taiwan have nothing to be ashamed of - the outcome could have easily been reversed. Congrats to Japan on a well played game - that is a very well balanced team with good pitching depth and hitting. Good luck the rest of the way. Box/Post Game Interview

MLB:
Wang will face Jeremy Bonderman and the Detroit Tigers again on Saturday.

US MINORS:

A - Wisky won 9-4. KH Lo hit HR #4 and was 2-4 with a RBI and his 27th SB on the season. Box

AAA - Vegas is down 4-3 in the 3rd. Hu is currently 1-1. Box

NPB:
The Tigers lost 8-1. WC Lin was 0-4. Box

CPBL:
Lions 13 - Bears 7: The Lions were led by a strong performance from game MVP - SP Brian Reith (7 IP, 2 ER allowed, 4 hits, 3 K's, 2 BB's) - he is now 7-0 in the league. Reith received plenty of run support from his big guns - Tilson Brito hit HR #28 and was 1-5 with 2 RBI's/1B KC Kao hit HR #16/and C CK Kao was 2-5 with a double and 3 RBI's. For the Bears, Gary Rath failed to pick up win #13 as he was knocked out after 2 innings. CFC did hit HR #20 and was 3-4 with 2 RBI's.

A Rivalry Renewed....

Amateur:
Taiwan beat Mexico 4-2 today in the LLWS. Despite being 2-hit and K'ing 11 times against the SP from Mexico, the kids from Taiwan would collect some timely hits - scoring 3 runs on 2 HR's (the first two of the tourney). Chi-Yuan Chen, Taiwan's #2 SP, pitched well. Box/Game Recap/Post Game Interview. Mexico would go on to lose to Venezuela later in the day, thus sending Taiwan into the International Semifinals as the #2 seed from their pool. *Taiwan defeated the Netherlands 11-1 on Sunday at the LLWS behind some solid hitting and pitching and a litany of errors committed by the other team. *Here's the Box Score, Game Log, and Game Recap from last night's game between the US and Taiwanese junior NT's. CC Chen continues to swing a hot bat this summer- he was the team's best hitter at the Palomino World Series. The ace of the PWS team Chih-Lung Huang made an appearance in last night's game. Although he wasn't dominant, keep in mind that he started and won against the Premier All-Stars on Thursday - where he allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 6 IP while K'ing 6. Rong-Hao Hsieh, the consensus top Taiwanese HS player in next year's graduating class, also appeared in yesterday's game and didn't fare that well - he reportedly topped out at 88 mph yesterday. However, Hsieh also threw on Thursday against the Canadian junior NT - where he allowed 1 run on 1 hit over 5 IP - while K'ing 5. The team played the Premier All-Star team today.

Tough Opening Loss in the LLWS....

MLB:
CMW will pitch on Sunday vs. Jeremy Bonderman and the Detroit Tigers. This will be his third crack at win #14.

HC Kuo has resumed throwing - that's encouraging to hear.

Amateur:
Taiwan lost a close game to Venezuela 2-1 in the opener at the LLWS. Both teams started their ace - hence the low scoring affair. Chao-Min Wang, the 5'10" flamethrower starter for Taiwan had a game-high 10 K's and was throwing 75-76 mph (equivalent to 98-99 mph in the MLB). Despite the loss, Taiwan just has to finish in the top 2 of its group to advance to the International Semifinals. Taiwan's next game is on Sunday at 1:00 PM Pacific against the Netherlands. Box/Post Game Interview/Recap-Pics
After watching today's game, this year's team has a much better shot than the last representative from Taiwan in 2004 - at least there is a clear-cut ace in Wang and the #2 pitcher Chi-Yuan Chen is supposed to be pretty good as well. Hopefully the bats will get untracked in the next few games. *updated

Wed. Scores...

Amateur:
The World Youth Baseball Championships have been cancelled. Good to see the IBAF take action against the perpetrator(s) - although ultimately it's the kids who suffer the repercussions.

In the Pony League World Series, Taiwan defeated Chesterfield, VA 7-2 today. It's do or die now as Taiwan will play Puerto Rico tomorrow at 2:30 PM Pacific. Listen here. Should Taiwan win on Thursday, it would have to face Puerto Rico again on Friday (double elimination preliminary format).

The Taiwanese junior NT will play two tomorrow.

Taiwan will be making its first appearance in the 2007 LLWS on ESPN2 at 3:00 PM Pacific on Friday. Taiwan will be facing Latin American champ - Maracaibo, Venezuela.

US MINORS:
Chao-Kuan Wu has retired - the Indians and former Mariner farmhand will attempt to revive his career in the CPBL. ND for CMW...

MLB:CMW earned a ND against the Orioles after leaving the game in the 7th with a 6-4 lead. Unfortunately for Wang, reliever R. Villone and closer M. Rivera would each give up a run to allow the Orioles to tie things up in the 9th. The Yankees would score a run in the bottom of the 9th to pull out a 7-6 win. CMW pitched 6 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits - he also allowed his first HR since June 28th - when he last faced the Orioles . Box/Recap

AMATEUR:
1)Here are the final stats for the senior NT at the WPT. The team Cuba sent to the WPT was essentially their "B" team - although they did have a few players that played on their '06 WBC team (finished 2nd to Japan). Cuba will be sending their top squad to the World Cup that will be held later this year (November) in Taiwan. Three members of the Taiwanese NT made the All-Star team:
1)2B Ming-Chue Tsai
2)SS Han Lin
3)LHP Wei-Hua Lee
Here's a pic of the senior NT. Congrats on your second place finish! A big thank you to Cor for providing the 411 and pic for the WPT!

-8/29 Championship & Consolation Games

4)the Premier Baseball All-Star team on 8/19 Sunday at 2 PM

Amateur:
Taiwan lost to Cuba 2-0 in the championship game at the WPT. The game was very close (just like the previous two games), although Cuba was able to come through in the clutch when it mattered the most. Box A second place finish to Cuba ain't too shabby!

Game MVP went to Bulls SP Alfredo Gonzalez who won his 7th game - pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits - to go along with K's and 3 BB's. With so many hits in the game, I'll just name how the notables did in the game: Tarzan was 2-6 with 2 RBI's while Chia-Chia was 0-2 with a walk.

Friday Rundown...

Amateur:
Taiwan beat the US 1-0 in the WPT on Friday. It was Taiwan's second win against the US in the tourney. The star of the game was SP Wei-Hua Lee who threw a CG shutout: giving up only 4 hits to go along with 6 K's and 6 walks. Chien-Yu Kuo tripled in the first and scored the game's only run. Yi-Chuan Lin and Han Lin both had 2 hits in the game. Box/Recap

Taiwan is finished with preliminary play and is currently sitting at 4 wins and 4 losses. Here are the team's stats through 8 games. Cuba is already in the championship game due to it's 6-0 record. If the US (4-3) defeats Cuba in its last game, it will play in the championship game. The Netherlands (3-3) still has two games remaining against Cuba and Japan and would need to win both and have the US lose to Cuba in order to advance to the title game. The only scenario for Taiwan to advance to the championship game is if the US and the Netherlands lose all of their remaining games.

More on the AA World Youth Baseball Championships. The way Venezuelan officials handled this is an embarrassment to the sport and the spirit of competition. Thanks for crushing the dreams of these 18 innocent kids.

Tuesday Scoop....

Amateur:
1)Taiwan lost to Tamiami, FL 16-10 in the semis of the Bronco World Series - thus ending their run in Monterey, CA. The team had fallen behind early in the game 8-1, but had managed to crawl back into the game tying things up at 10 runs apiece in the 6th inning. Unfortunately, the Tamiami squad was too powerful as they hit 2 HR's in the 7th inning to complete the scoring. Taiwan, on the basis of its record, finished 3rd in the World Series.

2)Taiwan will not be competing in the World Youth "AA" Baseball Championships that will be held in August in Venezuela - the team was not issued player visas from the host country for BS political reasons. Link If you ask me, Venezuela should NEVER be allowed to host another IBAF event again. It is sickening to see the kids from Taiwan get punished for some political platform when the only thing they really care about is playing baseball. Sports should be used as a means to unite people not segregate them! *EDITED - UPDATED

3)In the WPT, Taiwan lost another close game to Cuba - this time in 13 innings. Despite leads of 3-0 after 4 and 5-4 after 8, Taiwan came up short as Cuba pulled out a 6-5 win. DH Chun-Tai Wang cracked a HR and drove in 2 for Taiwan while OF Chih-Yao Chan was 3-7 with a double and a RBI. Box Taiwan will play the host team tomorrow.
