A team from Taipei County won the recently completed 26th annual boys IBA (International Boys Baseball Nankyu Baseball Association) World Championship (use of a rubber ball with a hollow air center). The tourney for players 12 and under ran from July 26th-28th.
Bracketed with a team from Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, the kids from Taiwan managed to win all of their preliminary games. Then in the final round, Taiwan beat China 10-0 in its opening game before defeating a team from Mexico 5-0 in the semifinals. Taiwan beat Edogawa, Japan in the championship game 10-0. Taiwan won its last title in 2006.

15 and under Champs

Taiwan also sent a representative to participate in the 5th annual junior IBA World Championships (for players 15 and under). The tourney ran from the 27th-29th of July. The team won its pool and then proceeded to beat two teams from Japan in the semifinals (4-2) and finals (1-0) to win its third championship in this event.

News & Notes...

NT:

L-R: CH Lin, KH Lo, CH Chiang, Coach Gong, CJ Lo, KW Cheng, YW Kuo, CC Lee

Here's an album featuring pics of the weary-eyed duo of Yen-Wen Kuo and Che-Hsuan Lin from yesterday. Lin is holding a replica of the bat he used to slug a HR at the ASFG.

Vid - Press conference with all of the kids from the US and the amateur pitchers:

Miscellaneous:
Ray Poitevint (the Chicago White Sox Special Assistant to the General Manager, International Operations) was recently in Taiwan checking out some IBB clients including RHP Ying-Shan Wang. The IBB rep in charge of RHP Ying-Shan Wang is Samuel Fu, the former White Sox scout in Taiwan (in 2007). Interesting note is that Ray Poitevint was the former head of IBB. The lone Taiwanese player in the White Sox organization, RHP Po-You Lin is also an IBB client.

Juniors Beat Puerto Rico.......

World Junior Championships:

Che-Ming Su

Yu-Hsiang Chen

Taiwan beat Puerto Rico 2-1 in 11 innings to lock up the #3 spot in their pool. Game MVP? That would go to SP Che-Ming Su, who threw a CG (11 innings), allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits. Su has now thrown 16 innings without allowing an ER and owns 2 of Taiwan's victories. The #3 and 4 hitters in the lineup continued to hit well (1B Yu-Hsiang Chen was 2-5 with a double/.368 BA overall while SS Fu-Lin Kuo was 1-5 with a double/.333 BA overall) Box
The team will now play an extremely talented South Korean squad tomorrow. The winner will advance to the semifinals. Jiayo!

What's Up with Rong-Hao Hsieh?

The one-time phenom's struggles of late (in Canada) can be explained in this vid taken from today's game against Cuba:

The kid was clocked in the 84-86 mph range on average. He's clearly lost a few ticks off of his fb.

Kai-Wen Cheng/Royals Update....

Here's an update to an earlier post on scouting in Taiwan (Samuel Fu is no longer with the White Sox, Allen Lin has signed Chao-Ting Tang, and Ken Su is the Yankees local scout). The Kansas City Royals' main man in Taiwan is Adam Hislop.
The Royals scout was rumored to have met with RHP Kai-Wen Cheng this past week. Cheng, along with Chia-Jen Lo are two of the bigger named unsigned amateur players in Taiwan. It's no coincidence that these 2 kids (along with RHP CC Lee) are the only amateur players on the Olympic national team. Cheng, who reportedly turned down a $30K offer from the Twins, is supposedly seeking $300K.
MC Lin
Chung-Dao HS senior to be- Ming-Chie Lin was also rumored to have been on Hislop's radar recently. Lin, who has good size - standing in at 6'2", throws in the low 80's but has a poor delivery.
It will be interesting to see if the Royals' history of financial constraints will hinder its abilities to sign kids in Taiwan. None the less, you gotta give the Royals some credit for stepping up their international presence in Asia.

Tuesday Scores...

The junior NT got hammered by the Cuban squad 13-3 in a 10-run rule mercy-shortened 7 inning game. Rong-Hao Hsieh took his 2nd loss of the tourney after allowing 5 runs over 2 IP and the defense committed an uncharacteristic 5 errors in the game.
Box
Taiwan's final game in pool play is against Puerto Rico - win or lose, Taiwan should finish as the #4 seed in their bracket. The bad news is that Taiwan will then face the #1 seed in pool A - the winner of tomorrow's USA vs. South Korea game.

The KC Royals are interested in righty Chia-Jen Lo. Word has it that the Royals scout in Taiwan went to see Lo several times when he was working out in Kaohsiung's training complex. LL Update...

LL:
There will be no Williamsport this year for the kids from Taiwan. In a do-or-die game, Taiwan lost to Hong Kong 4-1 on Wednesday. Hong Kong will now face Guam in the Asia-Pacific championship game on Thursday for the right to play in Pennsylvania.

On to Monterey and Washington!

LL/Pony:

KY Lee (L) & CM Tu (R)

Taiwan pulled out a close 2-1 decision over Japan in the Bronco division (Pony) Asia-Pacific Zone Tourney to advance to Monterey, CA. Starting pitcher Chia-Ming Tu (hit 75 mph) was spot-on, holding the team from Japan to 1 run over 7 innings, K'ing 9. Kuan-Yi Lee would come on in the 8th and overpower his opponents with an 80 mph fastball (a plus-plus fb at this age level) to pick up the win!
Chia-Ming Tu would lead the tourney with an .800 BA, while Kuan-Yi Lee won the HR crown (with 1). The tourney MVP would go to their teammate Kuan-Yu Shih.
With two aces, this team should fare very well in the US.

The reps from Taichung in the Pony division also wrapped up a spot in Washington, PA by beating both Japan 12-4 and South Korea 8-0 to take the Asia-Pacific crown.

Over in Hong Kong (LL action), the boys lost 4-2 to South Korea, putting them in a must-win situation over the host team tomorrow. The team will also need some help from the Thai team (either a win or score a lot of runs).

MC Elected to the HOF....

I know I'm a day late on this and this has nothing to do with baseball, but Michael Chang (an ABC) was elected to the Tennis HOF yesterday. MC, whose parents grew up in Taiwan, was one of my idols in my formative years. There weren't that many Asian (Asian-American) role models at the time, but MC stood out as an underdog whose grit, determination, & athletic gifts allowed him to compete and succeed at the highest level in the tennis world.
